Family,

“Honor your father and your mother.” The importance of this Commandment is impressed upon us as little children and continues throughout our lives. Although our awareness of the command is constantly being rekindled, nevertheless there are times when we feel resentment, even anger, toward our parents. But that commandment is always there, at the center of our awareness-haunting us with feelings of guilt.

Earlier this year; one of the newspaper comic strips ran an episode on the theme of the commandments. It shows an elderly woman sitting up in bed in communication with her dead husband’s spirit. Apparently she is resentful of something her oldest son had said or done. She says, “I want to ask a favor of you up there. The Fourth Commandment, ‘Honor Your Father and Your Mother,’ is fine but it needs to be more specific. Ask the authorities please to add Commandments 4A, 4B, and 4C.” We don’t have time here to go into all the details of the…
