Many of us remember the story of “David and Goliath” as part of our introduction to the Bible. For little children it is an exciting adventure story. Goliath was the champion warrior of the Philistines, who were enemies of the Israelites. Goliath stood nine-and-one-half feet tall and was very strong. In the story, with the Philistine and Israelite Armies facing each other, Goliath issues a challenge. He shouts to the soldiers of Israel: “Choose one of your men, and have him come down to me. If he beats me in combat and kills me, we will be your vassals; but if I beat him and kill him, you shall be our vassals and serve us. I defy the ranks of Israel today. Give me a man and let us fight together” (1 Sam 17:9-11).
