OH FOR A WIFE LIKE THAT!
In a recent issue of Partnership, William Petersen writes about the strong marriage of Sarah and Jonathan Edwards of 18th century New England. Though very different in personality they had a deep fondness for each other and had a strong marriage. Petersen writes: Jonathan always enjoyed writing more than preaching, so he wrote out all his sermons. His style was certainly not dramatic. According to one biographer, Jonathan “spoke quietly and distinctly. His face was grave, his manner dignified. He used no gestures . . .” Edwards rose early each day. He noted in his journal, “I think Christ has recommended rising early in the morning by His rising from the grave very early.” He had a phobia of wasting time. He spent much time praying and reading his Bible, and reserved one hour each day for physical work. Chopping wood was a favorite wintertime chore. But Sarah was the manager of the garden and fields.
