TURNING WINE INTO WATER
A doctor in a small French village was about to retire. He had given himself for many years serving the people. They couldn’t afford to pay him much, but he cared for them as he was able. As the day of his retirement approached the people wanted to make an expression of their gratitude and affection. It was proposed that on a given day, since they had so little money to give, each family bring wine form its own cellar, according to their ability and pour it into a large barrel in the village square which would be presented to the doctor as an expression of their gratitude. The evening came and the barrel of wine was taken to the doctor’s home and presented with all the inevitable speeches of endearment.
