Achieving self-respect, self-esteem, peace of mind, a sense of worthwhileness, a sense of purposefulness — these are ambitions of us all. Sure, we all want to “get it all together,” but oh how complicated the process seems to have become in our time! In recent years, there has been an explosion of popular “self-help” books telling us how to take ourselves apart and put ourselves back together again. Now, some of these books have been helpful to some people, I’m sure. But so many books of this kind, each with its own so-called “fresh approach” to the subject of “who-we-are-and-what-we-ought-to-do,” tend to be sources of confusion rather than clarification. Nevertheless, when you sort out all this material and sift it all down, most of it seems to end up saying that in order to achieve wholeness of life we must learn to care for one another.
