A man was going from Athens to Piraeus. Another man overtook him and offered to buy his donkey. After a bit of bargaining, they concluded the sale.

It was a hot day, so the ex-owner sat down to rest. He chose the shadow of the donkey as the coolest place he could find. The new owner objected, saying he had bought the donkey, and with his purchase went full rights to the donkey’s shadow.

The discussion grew hotter than the afternoon sun. The ex-owner claimed he had just as much right to the shadow as the new owner. He hadn’t sold the shadow, he bellowed.
