COURAGE, OR JUST PLAIN SPUNK I
‘ve been reading a biography of Mary Slessor and have found the account of the well-known 19th century missionary to be particularly inspiring. In her early days in Scotland, even before becoming a missionary to the West Coast of Africa, Mary Slessor, the girl who worked in the weaving mills ten hours a day, showed a great deal of moxie as she also did evangelistic work in some of the toughest slums of Dundee. Note the following account: Open-air work was at that time dangerous, but she and a few others attempted it: they were opposed by roughs and pelted with mud. There was one gang that was resolved to break up the mission with which she had come to be identified. One night they closed in about her on the street. The leader carried a leaden weight at the end of a piece of cord, and swung it threateningly round her head. She stood her ground. Nearer…
