RESPONSIBILITY
In the harbor, where both great ships and small pleasure craft berth, there is a warning. Plain for all to see is a sign which reads, “Slow! You Are Responsible For Your Own Wake!” It is the rule of the sea that a ship is responsible for its own wake. A large ship going full speed would play havoc with smaller craft and with the shore installations. The rule is that you must not make waves which could prove hazardous to others. Despite time and cost, even the largest freighters must slow down. Our society has a way of looking up to people who make waves. We are inwardly impressed by those who “make it.” And that often makes us indifferent to those injured by the waves that are made.
