A week after his mother’s funeral, a man went to see his pastor …
The man was in the clutches of overwhelming guilt and remorse. He confessed that his relationship with his mother always had been strained and sometimes distant. In short, he deeply regretted not having been a better son to his mother. “Even in her dying days I didn’t give her the care she needed and deserved,” he lamented. “But now she’s dead, and there is nothing I can do about it.”
After listening to the man’s agonizing tale, the pastor shared with him the Good News of God’s forgiveness:
That there was “something bigger” in the world than he was;
that the “something bigger” was the reality of Divine Grace and Mercy;
that he had the opportunity now to accept the gift of forgiveness — not because he earned it but because it is God’s Nature to give it.
Then the pastor said,
I know of an elderly woman in our congregation…
