The year was 1905. Albert Einstein astounded the scientific community with a Formula For the Ages — e = mc2 (energy equals mass times the speed of light squared). The formula proved that in everything physical in the world, there is tremendous energy that can be released. In time, Einstein’s equation gave mankind the ability to unleash vast amounts of energy from a single atom. His discovery opened up a completely new world of scientific thinking, and demonstrated that nuclear energy offered a source of almost unimaginable power. Einstein had labored with the firm conviction that there were fixed truths in the physical world that needed only to be discovered. “I cannot believe,” he said, “that God plays dice with the Universe.”
