Thank God!

When Jesus of Nazareth began His public ministry, immediately the question was raised, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Soon, some of His neighbors were so disturbed by the things He was preaching that they formed a lynch party — tried to kill Him. And, in the end, His closest followers abandoned Him when His countrymen traded His life for a despised jailbird. Not in our wildest dreams and imaginings could we have conceived of an all-knowing, all-powerful God who freely embraces for Himself the limitations and the sufferings of His creation. Author Dorothy Sayers offers this down-to-earth reflection on the subject:

For whatever reason He chose to make man as he is — limited and suffering and subject to sorrows and death — He had the honesty and courage to take His own medicine. Whatever game He is playing with His creation, He has kept His own rules and played fair. He can exact nothing from man that He has not exacted from Himself.
