A proud mother wrote,
My daughter, Francesca was about four years old when she first became aware that numbers were not just new words in her vocabulary or names for digits. She learned also that they can be used to express quantity. This step, as all parents learn, follows the ëso bigí stage. One memorable day Francesca turned to me to express her love with the help of her new-found knowledge. She said, ìMommy, I love you ten times.î Then, after deep thought she said, ìI love you twenty times.î After another short pause she reached a breathless pinnacle with, ìI love you six hundred times.î
A grateful hug and kiss from me produced a tiny frown and then a final outburst, ìMommy, I love you more than all the numbers!î1
