Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes once said that it is not so important where a person stands as is the direction in which he is moving. That sounds like something John the Baptist might have told his people as he announced the coming of Jesus Christ: The time has come He said and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the Good News (Mk. 1:15).
In today’s Gospel Lesson, the Risen Christ appears to the disciples and, as He already had done over-and-over again, tells them what moving in a new direction is all about. So you see how it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, He says to them. Then He adds, And that, in His Name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations … you are witnesses to this (Lk. 24:47,48).
