Just a few hours before His crucifixion, Jesus prayed to the Father that His disciples might experience eternal life. “And eternal life is this,” He prayed, “to know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” (Jn. 17:3).
In today’s Gospel Lesson, a lawyer (representing all of humanity, in a sense) asks Jesus this question: “Master, what must I do to inherit eternal life? What is written in the Law?” (Lk. 10:25).
Lord, what shall we do to inherit eternal life? What is written in our faith?
The correct answer, Jesus says, is that you must love God and love your neighbor. Love your God and love your neighbor and you will begin to experience eternal life now! “Do this and you will live,” Jesus says to the lawyer in today’s Lesson. Hearing this, the lawyer continues his cross-examination of Jesus. “And who is my neighbor?” he asks.
