The Hardest Thing Of All

Scripture

Matthew 5:3

As a University student hurried to her two-hour, final exam in chemistry, she encountered one of the campus chaplains. She immediately stopped and said to him, “Will you pray for me at four p.m.?” To which the Chaplain replied, “Of course. But why do you want me to wait until then?” Said the student, “My two-hour chemistry exam begins at three p.m. I’d like to see first if I can do it on my own.”

The Gospel truth is, of course we can do nothing of value on our own, nothing apart from trusting the Loving Presence of the God at the deepest level. We can do nothing apart from trusting God who gave us life and sustains all of life.

In today’s Gospel Lesson, Jesus tells us that the necessary precondition for our wholeness of life — genuine happiness — is to trust everything to God, that is, our very lives.
