Do you remember the story of Pinocchio? Whenever he told a lie, his nose got longer. But one novelist-1 wrote an even better story. It’s about a man who, every time he did something that was at odds with his true self — every time he yielded to the devil’s voice, he shrank a little. He shriveled. He became smaller and smaller. And isn’t that a picture of how we look at times? Outwardly, we may project a giant image, but inwardly, we are all shriveled up — and we know it. We have lost our way. We don’t know what we stand for. We don’t know what to believe anymore. We don’t know who or what to depend on anymore. And we conform to any principle that comes our way.
