Growth

A minister greeted an old rabbi whom he had not seen for many years. “Why, you haven’t changed a bit since the last time I saw you,” the minister offered. The old rabbi looked over his glasses and said, “That’s an insult. There are many ideas within me that have grown since you last saw me.” The minister explained, “But I mean you look the same.”

The old rabbi said, “My son, that still is an insult. There are new wrinkles in my brow and new lines in my face, and every one of them is a symbol of some crisis, and all of these crises have deepened my soul. Please acknowledge the new wrinkles and lines in my face. Please don’t tell me I haven’t changed!”
McClain, C.A. (adapted).
