A preacher was asked to fill in for the pastor who was unable to perform his duties because of illness. The substitute began his sermon by explaining the meaning of the word substitute. He said, “Suppose you were to break a window and then nail a piece of plywood in place of the windowpane. You see, that is a substitute.”
After the sermon, a woman came to praise him for delivering such a fine sermon. She took his hand and then said, “I want to tell you how inspired I was by your sermon today. In my book, you were no substitute — you were a real pane.”
