When World War II ended in Europe, a German theologian took his students to a refugee camp in West Berlin where they put on a daily “Punch-and-Judy” show for children. It was the high point of the children’s day, every day, and the hall where the show was put on was always filled to overflowing with young people. The theologian’s role always was that of the devil. He put a fiery red puppet on his hand and, in his best preacher ’s fire and brimstone voice, he urged those kids to all forms of evil. “Don’t brush your teeth! Don’t take a bath! Stick your tongues out at your counselors whenever you can! Throw banana peels in the streets so people will fall down and break their necks.”…
