As you can imagine, high flying birds pose considerable danger to commercial aircraft when the two meet at hundreds of miles per hour. A solution to the problem came in the form of hi-impact windshield materials designed and tested by American aeronautical engineers. A group of European engineers familiar with the work of their American counterparts consulted them for advice on testing new hi-impact windshield glass for the locomotive industry. They found out that the Americans had used ordinary supermarket chickens fired at high speed to simulate the impact of a bird hitting an aircraft windshield. Armed with this knowledge, the Europeans decided to use the testing method on their new locomotive windshields.
