“God created man in the image of Himself” (Genesis 1:27).
In the story “The Sword and the Stone,” the author has God give all the little embryos the opportunity to choose any gift they would like to receive from Him. The tiger embryo asks for fangs. The badger asks for claws. Some ask for protective shells; others, wings to fly. The fish choose fins and the deer fleetness of foot. Finally, it is the human embryo’s turn. He asks God only that he should be like Him — made to image Him; to think like Him; to be creative like Him; to love like Him. He tells God that to journey across the waters, he’ll make a boat; to fly, he’ll make wings; for shelter, he will build his own house. God is greatly pleased by the request.
