“Daddy Long Legs” was produced on the American Stage at a time when a play with a simple, forthright message of hope could enjoy success. The play is about an orphan girl who is befriended by a man whose identity is unknown. The benefactor is a young bachelor who is so charmed by the homeless girl that he devises a way to see that she is well provided for without revealing himself to her. Over a period of several years, the closest she ever comes to him is when she sees his shadow cast from an open office door. Later, she actually meets him, but does not recognize him as her sponsor. On through to maturity she knows him only as that shadow she had once seen, as he continues to provide for her every need. The play has a happy ending, of course. In…
