Remember Lewis Carroll’s “Through The Looking Glass”? When Alice meets the White Knight, he is carrying all kinds of objects he imagines will somehow contribute to his happiness. He has a mousetrap to protect him against rodents. He has a beehive with which to corral bees that might threaten him. He has a dish in which to put the plum pudding some kindly person might wish to give him. He has a contraption to fit over his horse’s ankles in order to protect it from shark bites. Heavily laden with such gadgets, the White Knight symbolizes those who seek happiness by means of accumulating things.
