Naivete | Children | Peace | War

“Happy the peacemakers. They shall be called sons of God” (Matthew 5:9).

A story appeared in Reader ’s Digest’s “Humor In Uniform” section about a father and his six-year-old daughter who were looking through some old family photographs. “My daughter,” the father said “a child of the space age, came across a picture of me taken when I was in the Army Reserves. ‘Daddy,’ she asked, ‘were you in a war?’ ‘Yes,’ I fibbed, to see what her reaction would be. Wide-eyed, she gasped, ‘Against which planet?’”

Not content, apparently, with leaving our children a legacy of war on earth, we’ve already got them used to the idea that if we ever do discover living creatures on other planets, surely we’ll go to war against them. (The peacemakers still have a long way to go!)
