LEFTOVERS
Aging asphalt groaned beneath the Texas heat as the forenoon grasshoppers chorused the countryside with clarion commotion. A pervading scent signaled leftover wildflowers slowly and surely becoming useful seed. The old Farm-to-Market Road mourns from disrepair since the new US highway was upgraded a mile away. Patching and preservation was not a priority on this tattered and trivial byway. He stood by the leaning mailbox, shading his eyes from the sun, lingering with his memories and awaiting the rural postman. Ralph has lived alone in his remnant dwelling for almost ten years. Slowly his children have moved away, taking with them a fragment of their father’s song. But Ralph is not lonely or downhearted! Everyday, as the light battles back the night’s blackness, Ralph climbs into his old pick-up truck remaining from another generation and slowly drives into town. On many days Ralph visits the Nursing Home on the edge of the city where the populace’s leftovers are gathered. Wednesday will find him…
