MIRACULOUS PROVISION
Donald Grey Barnhouse, while pastor of the Tenth Avenue Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, made it his practice to open himself up for questions on Sunday nights. Students from surrounding colleges jammed the auditorium weekly. One evening, a student raised his hand and mockingly asked, “Dr. Barnhouse, explain to us how the Israelites walked through the wilderness for forty years without wearing out their sandals.” Dr. Barnhouse hesitated for a moment, and then spoke a single monosyllable, “God!” “Oh, now I understand,” the student laughed uneasily. “No, you don’t,” Barnhouse shot back. “Nobody does. We should never apologize that Christianity is beyond understanding. God’s ways are past finding out.”
