One day, about eight years ago, Carol and I found ourselves in the position of being richer than we thought. We, like most other people, always seem to have more month than paycheck. We’ve been waiting for that to change for fourteen years. Never seems to change. The daily topic of discussion between us eight years ago was the condition of our mattress. It was a real one-of-a-kind. It was a twenty year old, Firestone mattress. I used to lovingly describe it as old tires in a bag. One particular Saturday, we were kind of “looking” in a furniture store at some new mattresses. We really needed to get one. The salesman said we could have one.
