MARRIAGE BY PROXY
On January 11, 1991, a very unusual wedding took place. For it was on that day that Marine sergeant Tim Burke, of Moorestown, New Jersey was married even though he missed his own wedding. I know that sounds strange, but Burke and his fiancee Julie Ople were married on that day by Proxy. You see, Burke met his fiancee while he was stationed in the Philippines years ago. After Burke’s proposal, Julie applied for a visa to come to the United States in order to get married. Burke was then sent to Saudi Arabia in August because of the conflict in the Persian Gulf. The problem came two months later when Julie received her visa. The visa was only good for three months. Burke was unable to get leave to come back to the States to marry. By December all hope had run out since Julie was unable to receive an extension on her visa. But Burke’s friend Philip Simpson learned…
