ELEPHANTS REMEMBER
A man who owned an elephant offered a standing bet that no one could force his elephant to kneel and for a long time many people tried, but no one was able to get the elephant to kneel, and then one day a man came along and asked if he could try. “Of course,” said the owner, “but quite a few people have tried and failed and lost a lot of money.” But that did not deter the man. He walked about twenty paces behind the elephant and ran toward the beast. With a shout he gave the elephant a flying kick right behind the left knee. The elephant immediately dropped to the ground, kneeling in pain. The man collected the $500 and walked away. After losing the bet, the owner announced a new bet: $1,000 for anyone who could make his elephant move his head up and down and then side to side. The owner became wealthy with this new wager.…
