WITH TWO PENNIES
Mary Jo Tulley writes that when she was a child, her family lived from payday to payday. Her mother would wait until her father returned on payday before she could purchase the food for the evening meal. Nonetheless, in his “Irish Wisdom,” he would never come home without something that would feed what he called a deeper need. One day it might be a bunch of daisies. On another occasion it was a box of chocolates, and on another it was yet another mouth to feed — a puppy! She writes that an old proverb teaches that if one has two pennies, one is for a loaf of bread, and the other is for a flower. From Emmanuel, by Mary Jo Tully
