UNSEEN SHARKS
Author Michael Crichton tells of a time he and his brother were diving off the coast of Bora-Bora. They were diving in a lagoon and exploring the inner edges of a coral reef with a father and his ten-year-old son. The father wanted to take underwater pictures of the reefs but was quite concerned about the possibility of encountering sharks. Seeing sharks was not a possibility; it was a certainty. White-tip reef sharks were common in the area, but they posed relatively little danger. The father told his son not to worry about sharks. The son wasn’t worried about sharks, but the father was. The father and son dove for a while and swam back to the boat. The son was out of oxygen, and so the father returned to the sea alone.
