OBJECT LESSON ON PRAYER
Recently, I distributed bags of M&Ms to each person in the congregation to illustrate my message on 1 John 3:21-22 “…we have confidence before God and receive from Him anything we ask….” I told my congregation I wanted to make sure they got something out of at least one service so I was giving them something to enjoy. I instructed them to open the bag and take out the M&M they wanted. It was theirs…then after a brief pause I added, “You can have any M&M you want except red, yellow, brown, orange, green or blue.” After a few seconds of mumbling I concluded my introduction by saying, “I have just illustrated a common view of prayer. We say God answers the prayers of his children. He gives them what they ask, but by the time we add all the qualifying statements to the prayers, we often end up with nothing.”
