TRIBE OF THE KARENS
The Karens are an ancient tribe living in Burma. They are said to have migrated to that land from their original homeland in the Gobi Desert region of Mongolia. In tribal legends, they still call the desert, “the River of Sand.” Another ancient Karen legend helped make this race fertile ground for Christian missionaries. It is said the Karens’ ancestors in the Gobi possessed a book of “holy scriptures.” The book was lost during the migration, but they were told by the “Y’we” – the creative power – that it would someday be returned to them by a “white brother.” Uncanny parallels between the Karen legends and Bible stories led many colonial era missionaries to believe they had found one of the lost tribes of Israel.
