To be poor in spirit is to recognize our sin and need and then permit the riches of Christ to take effect in our lives. We are poor in spirit when we admit our inability to make ourselves acceptable to God and rely upon what he has done for us in Christ. It is pride that so often keeps us from the kingdom of God.
