MOZART NEVER HAD TO ASK
A composer who was just beginning asked Mozart for advice on how to construct a symphony. Mozart suggested gently that a symphony was the most demanding of structures, and that perhaps it would be better to attempt something simpler at first. The novice argued: ” But you were writing symphonies when you were much younger than I am!” Mozart answered, “Yes, but I never had to ask how.” By Andre Previn, This foreword was written expressly for The Easton Press, Library of Great Lives edition of Mozart
