PRESIDENTIAL POLITENESS
Barbara Bush wrote in her diary about presidential politeness: “(Pat Buchanan) endorsed George (Bush) strongly after cutting him to ribbons for month after month and was very extreme. It is hard for me to accept his kind of campaigning . . .” I sat next to (his wife) Shelley, whom I remember from the Nixon White House and like. I noticed all through the campaign that his sister Bay walked next to him and that Shelley walked behind them all the time. That made me think of George’s mom, who always noticed if the husband waited for the wife. She gave Ron Reagan high marks for being thoughtful to Nancy. She would have given Pat very bad marks. I remember one time we were with the Reagans at some ceremony or another. We were briefed and told that the Reagans would walk through the door followed by George and me.
