COST OF A UNIVERSITY
A lady in a faded gingham dress and old overcoat and her husband, wearing a simple, homespun, threadbare wool suit, stepped off the train in Boston one winter’s day and timidly headed to the outer office of the president of Harvard University. Seeing such backwood, country hicks, the secretary assumed they had no business at Harvard and abruptly told them, “He is busy all day” after their polite inquiry for an appointment. Quietly taking a seat they courteously said, “We’ll wait.” After several hours, the annoyed secretary went into the president’s office and told him about their presence suggesting, “Maybe if they just see you for a few minutes, they’ll leave.” He sighed in matched exasperation and nodded. Someone of his importance obviously didn’t have the time to spend with them and he detested gingham dresses and homespun suits cluttering up his outer office.
