God had called the People of Israel to be a “Chosen People,” not in the sense of privilege but in the sense of responsibility. It all started when God said to Abraham, “All the communities of the earth shall find blessing in you” (Gen.12:3). But Israel did not hear, Israel did not accept, Israel became self-centered, Israel rejoiced in what it meant to be a Chosen People only as far as her own life was concerned. After God had led them from captivity through the Red Sea, the mood was one of “Look what God has done for us, His very favorite People. Let’s celebrate!” Down through the centuries, time and time again, this same mood took over in the life of the nation, and they forgot completely their responsibility as a Chosen People.
