BEST THINGS IN WORST TIMES
In the mid 1600s, Oliver Cromwell was attempting to obliterate the monarchy and the Anglican Church in England. During this period of British history, Anglican clergy were the primary targets of religious persecution. Some Anglican pastors were undaunted in the face of this constant torment. An inscription found in Harold Church in Staunton, England attested to the enduring spirit of one such man. It read, “In the year of 1653 when all things sacred were throughout the nation destroyed or profaned, this church was built to the glory of God by Sir Robert Shirley whose singular praise it was to have done the best things in the worst times.” Adapted from Shepherding in the 21st Century
