NET LOSS OF PROGRESS
Instead of the workweek shrinking, it is expanding; instead of free time increasing, it is decreasing. And in spite of “time-saving devices,” we have less time… An axiom of progress is: The spontaneous flow of progress is toward increasing stress, complexity and overload. Now we may add a corollary to this axiom: The spontaneous flow of progress is to consume more of our time, not less… to consume more of our margin, not less. In other words, if we sit back and do nothing about it, and watch it happen to us, next year at this time, we will have less margin than we do right now. For every hour progress saves by organizing and technologizing our time, it consumes two more hours through consequences, direct and indirect, of this activity. Because this fact is counterintuitive and subtle, we do not recognize it as it happens… True, we get to places faster — but we have more places to go.…
