WITH CLEAR PURPOSE
Roy Gee writes about Dr. Newton Baker who was the Secretary of War during American President Wilson’s administration. While visiting a federal hospital during World War I, Baker visited a young man who had lost his eyes and his legs, one of his arms, and most of his face. Baker was struck by how cheerful and courageous this man was. Years later, Baker learned that this young man had married his nurse who was drawn by his positive spirit. The man had then gone to Johns Hopkins University and eventually received his Ph. D. having done some of the best work that the university had ever seen. Roy Gee then makes the connection to the church. The church is a place for those who are ugly and wounded. It is for the spiritually mutilated. We come to the church for help.
