S. I just finished reading Yeager, the autobiography of Chuck Yeager, well-known war hero, test pilot (who first broke the sound barrier) and currently cleaning up as a TV pitchman. It was fascinating, to say the least. In the chapter entitled “To Moscow With Jackie” Yeager tells about his flying across the Atlantic to visit the Soviet Union with famous woman pilot Jackie Cochran. Before they set out they had received permission from Gen. Tommy White, the Air Force Chief of Staff, to make stops at various Air Force installations for re-fueling and service. Gen. White had sent letters ahead to base commanders along the way. One of their first stops was to be at Presque Isle, Maine around two in the morning. As they approached the field they were almost out of fuel. But when they got the tower on the radio they refused permission for them to land. Yeager told them…
