THOSE PRETTY PICTURES
An old woman was living in Scotland in the most abject poverty. She had never had the advantage of education and had never traveled outside the borders of her own little township. But she had a son who became a sailor and was then traveling to the ends of the earth. Just now he was on the Atlantic someplace, on a ship which was carrying war material to England. However, because of the secrecy of his whereabouts, all she knew was that he was in the United States of America a good deal of the time. Then the rumors spread around the Scotch village that he had prospered, and the neighbors wondered why that son, who had a kindly reputation when he was a boy at home, would permit his mother to endure such sufferings.
