In his autobiography, Lord Inman, Governor of Charing Cross Hospital, London, tells about his mother. His father had died when he was young, and his mother was left with few resources to bring up four boys. She was a woman of great courage and faith. She took in washing, piles and piles of it. She added the job of caretaker at the local school. Then when someone was needed to scrub tombstones in the churchyard for two schillings each, she did that too. This last chore she did at night with one of the boys holding the lantern. Every night after the work was over, the mother got down the family Bible and read aloud a chapter to her boys. Lord Inman says: “We used to ask her, Mother, what benefits do you have in the Lord?” She replied: “Many. I have my health and strength.
