STRUCK DOWN, BUT NOT DESTROYED
Jim Ryun once held the record for the mile race. He was a devoted Christian man. In 1972 Ryun was set to run in the Olympics held in Munich, West Germany. Ryun was picked to win. Jim Ryun was known as a ‘lagger’ in running. That meant he would stay behind until the precise moment and then turn everything on to win the race. He was running in the 1500 meter race and with 500 meters left, a runner from Pakistan swerved into Ryun and made contact with Ryun’s feet. The contact made Ryun fall, taking a runner from Ghana with him. By the time they came out of their daze the two runners realized that the rest of the runners were way out in front. The other runner threw up his hands in disgust and walked off the track. Not Jim Ryun. There was no way for him to win his heat and yet while stunned and injured…
