EFFECTIVE WEAPONS
In his book The Last Lion, William Manchester relates that, at the beginning of World War II, Nazi Germany was preparing to invade Poland. Though the world had not yet seen the might of the modern German army, the Poles felt confident that they could repel a Nazi attack because Polish forces had a proud history of effectiveness with their twelve brigades of horse cavalry. But as the first battle began, the sad truth was revealed. When the Nazis appeared, the Polish cavalry officers sounded the charge and rode at the invaders at a steady gallop with their sabres and lances at the ready. But they were met by the guns of the newly-developed Panzer tanks and a modern, mechanized German army. The Polish army was quickly crushed by an enemy with superior weapons.
