God has designed thousands of ways for the animal kingdom to come into existence, but in my estimation the birth of the baby giraffe is of all births the most impressive. First, the mother giraffe doesn’t lie down for the birthing process, she stands up to bring her calf into the world. And her hind quarters are nearly ten feet off the ground. It seems almost unbelievable to me that the newborn giraffe is introduced into the world with such trauma. It’s ten feet off the hard ground! The mother giraffe lowers her head long enough to take a quick look. Then she positions herself directly over her calf. She waits for about a minute and then she does the most unreasonable thing. She swings her long pendulous leg outward and kicks her baby, so that it is sent sprawling head over hooves. When it doesn’t get up, the violent process is repeated over and over again.
