Agape Love | Christianity | Jesus

“My dear people, since God has loved us so much, we too should love one another” (I John 4:11)

Christian love is Christ-like — agape love. For a Christian, the word for love is that Greek word: agape. It was a neutral almost empty word until Christians got hold of it. Actually, it was hardly known in secular Greek until the time of the New Testament. That is why the New Testament writers chose it. They looked for an empty word into which they could pour all they had learned and experienced about the love of God in Jesus Christ. And they took that empty word and made it their own — our own — forever! “Agape” became the word for Christian love, a word which was defined by what those first Christians had seen and heard in Jesus Christ. Agape is the love we see in Jesus Christ!
