AN INFUSION OF COURAGE
It was late in the evening. At the end of a long, busy day I felt almost too tired to make my last pastoral visit. An elderly lady answered the door. I had not realized that she was one of the shut-ins of my new congregation or I would have called at an earlier hour. I decided that it would be a taxing visit and I wondered if I should have the energy to be of any help as a pastor. I need not have worried. The old lady put me at my ease. She seemed serene and contented. She smiled beautifully and spoke in a soft, soothing voice. I began to feel less tense and tired as I knew myself to be in the presence of a calm and radiant faith. She told me that she was not afraid of dying. “I shall never be afraid of anything anymore,” she said and she told me the reason. For years…
