DIE BEFORE YOU’RE DEAD
A little girl one night was saying the familiar bedtime prayer that goes “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep; If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.” She was rather tired that night and said it this way — “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep, If I should die before I live . . .” She made a mistake; yet, in a sense, she said a mouthful. The ultimate tragedy is not that we die, but that we too often die before we have really lived. True, we will always die incomplete no matter how old we become, but we spend so much of our time merely existing rather than discovering the fuller, abundant life that Jesus came that we might have.
